The anemometer

Anemometer cups

This is also built using a DIY sealant-cartridge. The construction is very similar to the Wind-Vane except there is only one reed-switch.

The anemometer cones are made from thick paper, mounted on rigid cardboard. All of this is given multiple coats of spray enamel, then varnish, to waterproof it.

It may sound strange to use paper and cardboard, however I found that it was virtually impossible to find bits of plastic that were just right, and the beauty of using paper and cardboard is that they are so easily modelled. The end result was remarkably strong and waterproof after spraying multiple times.

Unlike the wind Vane the shaft of the anemometer has to be able to rotate rapidly. Therefore it’s important to balance the cones as much as possible to avoid vibration. I used blobs of BluetakTM on the cone-tips, which I permanently fixed and sealed with glue and spray.
